Congratulations to all the participants in the Rhoades McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon. The event, held on a beautiful morning September 8, had 1,114 registered participants—the largest turnout in its 24-year history.


Michael Smith of Indiana was the men’s overall winner, with a time of one hour, 19 minutes, 16 seconds. The triathlon consisted of a half-mile swim, 17.2-mile bike ride, and 4.9-mile run around Reeds Lake.

Megan James of Portage won the women’s overall in a time of one hour, 30 minutes, 17 seconds.
Rhoades McKee was well represented among the triathletes, with Pat Drueke, David Bevins, Pete Lozicki, Paul McCarthy and Eric Starck all participating. Eric finished 12th overall with a time of one hour, 29 minutes, 26 seconds.

David was one of six participants competing in the Chariot Division, consisting of pulling a disabled child in a kayak for the swim, in a buggy for the bike race and in a jogging buggy for the run. His overall time was 2 hours, 11 minutes.

Rhoades McKee is contributing $10,000 a year for three years to the city of East Grand Rapids for the event, and raised $720 for St. John’s Home through contributions from participants.
