Scott J. Steiner
Mr. Steiner concentrates his practice
in the areas of environmental law, real estate law, land
use law, and condemnation. He particularly specializes
in complex commercial and industrial real estate transactions
involving sites with contamination or regulated features
such as wetlands, lakes, or streams.
His experience includes
work involving: due diligence for property transactions,
mergers and acquisitions (involving environmental and
other matters); drafting and negotiating all types of
documents involved in such transactions and otherwise
involving real property interests; representation of
clients in efforts to achieve closure of contaminated
sites and in obtaining liability protection under state
and federal laws; redevelopment of “Brownfields;” counseling
financial institutions on environmental liability issues;
advising clients as to regulatory compliance matters;
representation of clients in securing land use and zoning
permits and approvals; and representation of property
owners and governmental agencies in condemnation proceedings,
and the platting and replatting of property.
Mr. Steiner
was a cum laude graduate of both Central Michigan University
in1984 and Wayne State University Law School in 1988.
He is a member of the Grand Rapids Bar Association (Real
Estate Section and past president of the Environmental
Law Section), the State Bar of Michigan (Real Estate
and Environmental Law Sections, including the Natural
Resources and Superfund committees) and the American
Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy and
Resources (including membership on its Water Law and
Natural Resource committees).
In addition, he previously
was the President of the Schrems West Michigan Chapter
of Trout Unlimited, an 800 member conservation organization,
serves as Environmental Counsel for the Michigan Council
of Trout Unlimited, and was instrumental in establishing
the Rogue River Watershed Council. Mr. Steiner has served
as an adjunct instructor at Grand Valley State University
and is a frequent speaker on environmental law, land
use law, condemnation law, and natural resource matters.
