Tax Law

The Tax Law Practice Group at Rhoades McKee, headed by Ed Goodrich, consists of attorneys and other tax professionals with a depth of experience and expertise in representing and advising individuals and businesses in all aspects of both civil and criminal federal and state tax issues. Several of the attorneys in the Tax Group, including Tom Hogan, Randy Kolar, Pete Lozicki and Bob Shaver are CPA’s. Two of our tax attorneys, Mark Pendery and Terry Zabel, formerly represented the Internal Revenue Service regarding technical tax issues and tax litigation and two of our tax professionals , Don Campbell and Tom Clifford, are former Revenue Agents for the Internal Revenue Service.

Tax considerations effect nearly every business transaction and many aspects of business operations and personal financial planning. The attorneys and other tax professionals in the Tax Law Practice Group represent and counsel clients regarding technical issues raised by taxing authorities and provide proactive tax planning to keep the tax burden to the legal minimum.

The Tax Group has significant experience in resolving both civil and criminal tax controversies concerning assessment, collection, alter ego/nominee assertions, criminal tax investigations, and tax refunds. Our tax attorneys represent individuals, small, medium and large businesses, and tax exempt entities. The types of tax include: income tax, single business tax, employment tax, unemployment tax, sales tax, use tax, estate tax, excise tax and related penalties before federal, state and city taxing authorities.

Our tax expertise allows us to provide quality legal services in the following areas:

  • Strategic tax planning
  • Obtaining tax exempt status
  • Resolving audit issues and tax assessments raised by Taxing Authority Examination Divisions
  • Representing clients involved in criminal investigations and charges
  • Obtaining technical advice and rulings

  • Representing taxpayers before the Appellate or Hearings and Appeals Divisions
  • Representation before IRS Chief Counsel and Department of Treasury, Attorney General Divisions
  • Federal Tax Court litigation

Federal and state tax statutes, rulings and procedures are changing at an ever increasing pace. The taxing authorities themselves are undergoing an era of unprecedented restructuring, reorganization and refocus of their mission. The Tax Law Practice Group at Rhoades McKee is keeping abreast of the ongoing changes and keeps its clients advised of positions that will minimize their tax burden and effectively and efficiently resolve tax disputes. The Tax Group often interacts with the Real Estate, Litigation, Business and Bankruptcy Practice Groups at Rhoades McKee to accomplish the best results for our clients.

It is preferable to plan for the tax aspects of a transaction, litigation position or settlement, rather than react to the consequences. The Tax Law Practice Group at Rhoades McKee works with area accounting firms and other financial professionals to provide quality legal advice and service. It is the Tax Group’s goal to add value to each engagement.
