About Brett

What types of legal issues do you help individuals and businesses resolve?

I assist individuals who find themselves navigating complex legal issues in divorce, child custody, parenting time, support, adoption matters, and probate and estate administration. In addition, I help businesses and individuals dealing with real estate acquisitions and the management of business affairs.

How have your skills evolved in your career?

After I graduated from law school, I was equipped with a legal education that needed to be honed by real-world practice and experience. I began my legal career working at Legal Aid in Southwest Michigan. I worked with people that lacked the resources to handle serious legal matters alone. Working in that environment taught me how to listen and understand client concerns effectively, which led me to be creative in finding solutions to their situations.

What case did you find the most rewarding to work on?

My experience at Legal Aid allowed me to work with many clients in extremely tough situations that otherwise would not have had legal counsel. I represented a group of disabled people that their housing provider was mistreating. Ultimately, we reached settlements that allowed these clients to stay in their homes with the support they were legally entitled to.

Q: If you weren't a lawyer, what would you be?

A:

I worked as a geologist before going to law school. If I wasn’t a lawyer, I’d likely be out west somewhere collecting rocks.
