"To me, a lawyer is basically the person that knows the rules of the country. We're all throwing the dice, playing the game, moving our pieces around the board, but if there is a problem the lawyer is the only person that has read the inside of the top of the box."

About Jake

What types of legal issues do you help individuals resolve?

On a daily basis, I assist individuals and businesses in navigating the complex issues of corporate law.  These issues range from assisting clients to form new business entities, identify tax issues, purchase assets with an Asset Purchase Agreement, or prepare resolutions for a board of directors and shareholders.

What skills help you advise the client and achieve the best results or outcomes?

As a Rhoades McKee Summer Associate in 2017, I had the opportunity to work side by side senior attorneys and understand how to identify the best legal solution to meet the client’s business objective.  During the summer, I was also able to develop relationships with not only other attorneys but come to know the needs of West Michigan businesses and entrepreneurs. As Legal Extern for the Honorable Christopher Yates in 2016, my time in the courtroom provided me with insight on how business agreements will be interpreted.

What were some of your law school and community activities?

While in law school, I served as the Notes Editor for the Journal of Law, Technology and Policy and as a Member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and the Corporate and Business Law Association.  My engagement in these activities helped me to develop my writing skills and ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
