Paul A. McCarthy
Paul graduated with honors from
the University of Michigan Business School in 1989, earning
a B.B.A. degree with a finance concentration. He received
his law degree, cum laude, from Marquette University
in 1992, where was also an Associate Member of the Marquette
Law Review. Paul continued his focus on business-related
issues by earning an M.B.A. from Marquette University
in 1994, thus completing his dual-degree studies.
Paul
is a trial lawyer and focuses his practice on commercial litigation matters, complex civil litigation
matters, and professional liability defense. Paul handles
a host of business-related litigation matters, with special
emphasis on shareholder/member/partnership disputes,
post-acquisition disputes, shareholder/member oppression,
lock-outs, dissenters’ rights/appraisal actions, freeze-out
mergers, and officer/director liability actions.
He has
significant experience handling business valuation issues,
and is deepening his specialization by pursuing accreditation
as a Certified Business Appraiser (CBA) through
The Institute of Business Appraisers.
Paul’s litigation
practice includes trials in various state and federal
courts. He is also experienced in various forms of alternative
dispute resolution, including facilitative mediation
and arbitration. Paul is a member of the Michigan Bar
Association and various sections, including the Business
Law Section, and has served on State Bar Committees.
He is a member of the Federal Bar Association of Western
Michigan and is a member of the American Bar Association.
He is an active member of the Grand
Rapids Bar Association and is a former Chair of the Young
Lawyer’s Section. Paul is also involved in various community
activities. Paul joined Rhoades McKee upon his graduation
from law school in 1992, is a shareholder in the firm,
and has served as a member of the firm’s Executive and
Strategic Planning Committees.
