About Peter
How do you help businesses and individuals?
Most of my time is spent in the transactional world, advising on tax issues, corporate governance and formation, mergers and acquisitions, employee benefits, and other commercial transactions. I also frequently work with nonprofit and tax exempt entities, including charities, social clubs and associations, educational organizations, religious organizations, and private foundations. Many (seemingly) non-financial actions have a tax or financial component that can affect the decision-making process. I provide businesses and individuals with technical insight regarding these components to navigate legal landmines successfully.
What sets you apart from other lawyers in your practice field?
In addition to being a lawyer, I am also a Certified Public Accountant. I have several years of accounting and finance experience, including working as an auditor for a national accounting firm. Before becoming an auditor, I worked in the finance department of an international, publicly-traded company. The technical skills I gained from these roles not only assist me in providing sound legal advice, but also allow me to read financial documents and understand complex commercial transactions.
What type of cases do you find the most rewarding to work on?
I find the most satisfaction in negotiating settlement offers with the IRS on behalf of clients. Many clients I work with are ordinary taxpayers who have been unable to service their federal or state tax liability because of a job loss, medical bill, or an emergency. Allowing taxpayers to settle thousands of dollars in tax liability for a nominal amount provides them with relief from stressful collection notices and a fresh start. The settlement process also creates frequent opportunities to dispense advice on avoiding many of these issues in the first place.
