About Tom
What legal issues do your clients typically face?
Legal issues for people with family law problems, including parenting time, financial support, real estate, and taxes often have overlapping factors that should be considered. In addition, this is often an emotional time and my clients are frequently under a great deal of stress. My understanding of the complex legal issues, as well as the more personal side, is a result of over 30 years of experience practicing law.
How have your skills evolved in your career?
I began my career as a much more aggressive litigator but, over time, I have learned that divorce and family law requires a combination of strength and sensitivity. Although I have tried cases to conclusion in courtrooms throughout the state of Michigan, it has become clear to me that good lawyers find a way to keep their cases out of court because, in most cases, individuals should be making the decisions, not judges.
How do any of your community interests or activities facilitate how you represent your client?
For over 30 years, I have been an active leader in the Grand Rapids Bar Association. Martindale Hubbell, a peer rating review process completed by other judges and lawyers, has recognized my engagement in the professional community and work with other lawyers. My ethics and negotiation skills, as well as ability to work with other attorneys, all benefit my client’s interests and help us address and resolve his/her legal matter efficiently.
